The SBA and Hamish White
The Sustainable Builders Alliance (SBA) is where Australia’s most forward-thinking builders, designers, and trades come together to shape the future of housing. We’re talking Net Zero, healthier homes, and practical know-how you can actually use. Through hands-on events and real-world resources, the SBA helps the industry raise its game.
As a founding director, Hamish White drives the events program. Creating spaces where ideas spark, connections form, and the next wave of sustainable building takes shape.
Building For A Better Future
How the Sustainable Builders Alliance Is Changing the Game
The construction industry is at a turning point. With climate change accelerating and our built environment contributing heavily to carbon emissions, the way we build needs to change, and fast. That’s where the Sustainable Builders Alliance (SBA) steps in.
Born out of Australian Builders Declare, the SBA brings together a collective of experienced, independent sustainable builders with a shared goal: to drive Net-Zero, high-performing, and truly sustainable building practices across Australia.
Instead of working in isolation, these builders joined forces to create a louder, stronger voice for change. Together, they’re breaking down barriers, spreading practical knowledge, and creating a thriving community of builders, designers, trades, and professionals committed to leading the industry towards a carbon-neutral future.
Their mission isn’t just about “building green”, it’s about building better.
Better for the environment. Better for the people who live in these homes. Better for the long-term health and performance of every project.
Meet Hamish White
A Driving Force Behind the SBA
One of the SBA’s founding Directors is Hamish White, the owner of Sanctum Homes in Victoria and a leading voice in high-performance homebuilding.
Hamish’s journey into sustainable building wasn’t linear. He first earned a Business and Marketing degree from La Trobe University, but quickly realised that life behind a desk wasn’t for him. Drawn to hands-on work and a love for the outdoors (inspired in part by his wife, Lucy, an ecologist), Hamish began his carpentry and building career at 23.
His passion for the environment naturally led him towards sustainable and high-performance construction, eventually making Passive House standards the minimum at Sanctum Homes.
Beyond his own projects, Hamish is committed to lifting the entire industry. Through his work with the SBA, he helps run events, share knowledge, and connect like-minded builders and trades so they can learn from each other and push the standard of Australian housing higher.
Events That Inspire and Educate
One of the SBA’s most powerful tools for change is its events program, led by Hamish and the SBA team.
These gatherings aren’t your average industry conferences, they’re hands-on, information-rich experiences designed to:
Showcase real-world sustainable building techniques and case studies.
Give builders, designers, and trades practical skills they can apply immediately.
Create a space for networking and collaboration so attendees leave with both knowledge and connections.
Highlight cutting-edge products and technologies shaping the future of high-performance construction.
Events range from workshops and site tours to panel discussions and training sessions with industry leaders. Whether you’re just starting your journey in sustainable building or you’ve been doing it for years, these events provide the tools, community, and inspiration to keep raising your standards.

Why the SBA Matters
The SBA isn’t just an advocacy group, it’s a movement. They focus on:
Practical education:
Sharing the “how-to” of sustainable and high-performance building so more builders can adopt better practices.
Industry collaboration:
Connecting professionals who care about building well, so they can support each other’s growth.
Driving change:
Shifting the mindset of the construction industry towards carbon neutrality and long-term sustainability.
And they’re not waiting for policy to catch up; they’re creating change now.
